New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is having a nightmare season at the plate, but he still made himself available to the media following his latest hitless performance.
Volpe went 0-for-3 in the Yankees’ 6-5 loss to the New York Mets on Friday. He grounded into an inning-ending double play with the Yankees leading 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning, and manager Aaron Boone decided that would be Volpe’s final at-bat of the day.
Boone had outfielder Trent Grisham, who is batting .248 with 16 home runs and 33 RBI this season, hit for Volpe to lead off the ninth. After the game, Volpe was asked how difficult it is for an every-day player like him to be shown the bench with his team trailing 6-5 in the ninth.
“Yeah, I mean, the competitor in you wants to be out there and wants to help the team and feel like you can, but those things aren’t in my control,” Volpe said. “What is is just putting in the work and earning those at-bats.”
A reporter also asked Volpe to describe how he has been feeling at the plate.
“I mean, grinding, for sure. Trying to get pitches to hit and drive them and just feel comfortable and see the ball. Obviously, just working every day to feel good,” Volpe responded.
Volpe also said he feels “timing” is his biggest issue at the moment.
