Calgary’s Tillie Claggett goes low at PGA Women’s Championship of Canada

Tillie Claggett is one solid round away from earning a spot in her home country’s LPGA Tour event.

The Calgary product shot an 8-under 63 on Wednesday to take a commanding six-stroke lead into the third and final round of the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada in Burlington, Ont.

Claggett — who plays NCAA golf at Vanderbilt University and is a member of Golf Canada’s national team — is 11 under for the tournament. Jasmine Ly of Windsor, Ont., is second at 5 under.

The winner of the tournament, which is open to amateurs and pros, gets an exemption into next month’s CPKC Women’s Open, an LPGA event in Mississauga, Ont.

Claggett, who was raised in Calgary before moving to Texas with her family in her young teenage years, has played some of the best golf of her career this summer.

She was a semifinalist at the 122 Women’s Amateur Championship at Nairn in Scotland. Claggett then went on to finish runner-up at the Texas women’s amateur championship.
