Report: MMA legend Randy Couture airlifted to hospital after single-car crash

MMA icon Randy Couture was hospitalized on Tuesday following a single-car crash, per ESPN.

The accident occurred at a pro stock racetrack, after which Couture was airlifted to a local burn centre in Kansas City due to injuries stemming from the crash.

In an initial report by TMZ, Couture was said to have suffered first- and second-degree burns, trauma injuries and smoke inhalation from the incident.

The 62-year-old was expected to make his National Hot Rod Association racing debut later in the year as he had already started the licensing process to compete officially.

According to ESPN, sources close to Couture said the “initial hope and belief” is that he is expected to recover.

“The Natural” competed professionally from 1997-2011 and was the UFC’s first two-division champion en route to being inducted into the promotion’s Hall of Fame in 2006 — the fourth inductee all-time.

Couture was a three-time UFC heavyweight champion, two-time light heavyweight title-holder and one-time interim light heavyweight champ. He still holds the record for most title fights (16) and is tied with fellow UFC legend Stipe Miocic for most wins in the heavyweight division (6) under the banner. His six separate title reigns were also the most in UFC history and he was one of just two fighters to win a title bout after the age of 40.

The Everett, Wash. native remains close to the fight game as he serves as a commentator for the PFL.
