TNT escapes San Miguel as controversy mars Game 1

TNT benefited from a Mo Tautuaa dunk that was later nullified because of an offensive goaltending through a review and escaped with a 99-96 win over San Miguel Beer in Game 1 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals on Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Beermen were left aghast after the converted slam of Tautuaa, which initially put them up 98-97 with 56 seconds left, was reversed after a deadball situation, restoring the Tropang 5G’s lead.

The game clock had five seconds left following a jumpball when the coliseum announcer announced the decision.

Calvin Oftana would knock down two foul shots before CJ Perez missed a game-tying three to end the game. San Miguel’s team governor Robert Non confronted league officials once the buzzer sounded.

The win allowed the Tropang 5G to survive after blowing a 24-point lead when the Beermen scored 19 straight during the fourth quarter comeback.

RR Pogoy, back from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for most of the semifinals, came up with 23 points, including a three that made it 97-96 for TNT, time down to over a minute left.

Kelly Williams also returned from an ankle sprain and contributed nine points, seven rebounds and four assists in a starting role.

June Mar Fajardo finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds for the Beermen in the stinging loss.
