Former Canadiens, Canucks goalie Jaroslav Halak retires

After a career that has taken him across seven NHL teams, Jaroslav Halak has decided to hang up the pads for good.

The goaltender announced Friday that he’s retiring from professional hockey after a 17-year career.

The 40-year-old Slovakian last played in 2022-23 for the New York Rangers, where he appeared in 25 games with a .903 save percentage and a 2.72 goals-against average.

Across his 585 NHL games, Halak achieved a career .915 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against average while recording 53 shutouts. He won the William M. Jennings Trophy in both 2011-12 and 2019-20 as the goaltender who allowed the fewest goals in the regular season.

Halak was selected in the ninth round, 271st overall, by the Montreal Canadiens at the 2003 NHL Draft. He played in Montreal for four seasons before moving onto the St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and Rangers.
