MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas suffered another heartbreaking five-set meltdown, falling to first-leg champion Thailand, 25-18, 25-18, 14-25, 23-25, 7-15, in the SEA V.League second leg on Saturday at Jakarta International Velodrome in Indonesia.
The Philippine men’s national volleyball team lost steam after winning the first two sets, as the Thais dominated the third and leaned on Amornthep Konhan and Chaiwat Thungkam to prevail in the tight fourth set to force a decider.

Konhan and Kissada Nilsawai led Thailand’s run in the fifth with a 9-5 lead and never looked back to improve to a 2-1 record, bouncing back from a tough five-set loss to Vietnam.
Alas fell to a 1-2 record, needing to defeat Vietnam on Sunday at 3 p.m. and hope for Thailand to beat Indonesia for a chance to reach the podium.
The Filipino Spikers, who will compete and host the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Manila in September, placed fourth in Candon, Ilocos Sur, with a 2-2 record.
Leo Ordiales and Jade Disquitado led Alas anew, as they couldn’t sustain their momentum from a first win against Cambodia less than 24 hours ago.
