Colton Herta looking to defend 2024 win and deny Alex Palou in Toronto

When it comes to street racing in the NTT IndyCar Series, Andretti Global is the team to beat.

That was made clear earlier this season, when Kyle Kirkwood won on the streets of Long Beach and Detroit. It was reinforced on Saturday when Colton Herta won the pole for Sunday’s race on the streets of Toronto.

With Andretti’s track record on street courses, Herta — who won in Toronto last season — is confident but not complacent ahead of Sunday’s race.

“You definitely feel confident, but you know in the back of your mind the progression in IndyCar is so strong,” Herta said following his pole run on Saturday afternoon. “It could flip year-to-year. It could be due to (the) car, could be due to engine manufacturer — there’s so many different roles in play in IndyCar. You feel confident, but you never know what’s going to happen until you hit the track. But I’m glad nothing has changed.”

Kirkwood joined his teammate in the Firestone Fast Six and will start sixth on Sunday.

Both Andretti drivers will be looking to deny championship leader and three-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou his eighth victory of the season. Palou will start second on Sunday as he looks to grow an already near-indomitable points lead.

“We need to be heads-up on Sunday and not give this (expletive) another win,” Herta said, jokingly gesturing to Palou.

With Palou, Herta and Kirkwood all starting up front, Sunday’s race in Toronto is bound to be a heavyweight fight between three of the best drivers IndyCar has to offer.
