Champions League and World Cup winner in Sydney’s sights after horror season

Sydney FC are in talks to bring Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller to Australian shores in what would be one of the biggest transfer splashes in A-League history.

According to a Sydney Morning Herald report, Muller is considering a new challenge after leaving the Bavarian club following the money-spinning FIFA Club World Cup in the United States and is not short of offers from around the footballing world, with MLS side Los Angeles FC touted as the affable German’s landing spot.

An A-League side is never going to compete with deep-pocketed overseas clubs on remuneration but Muller does have links with Sydney – marquee man Douglas Costa is a former teammate, as is head of recruitment, Alexander Baumjohann.

The 35-year-old one-club man has won over 20 major trophies including two Champions League titles with Bayern and the 2014 World Cup.

The adaptable forward may no longer be lighting up Europe but his signature would signal Sydney FC’s intent to return to A-League contention after years of futility despite boasting the likes of Joe Lolley, Patryk Klimala and Costa.

Ufuk Talay’s squad will be overhauled ahead of the 2025-26 campaign after the former midfielder lost the services of Klimala and classy midfielder Anas Ouahim, as well as rising stars Adrian Segecic and Jaiden Kucharski, and Socceroo Anthony Caceres, who hinted at an impasse in contract negotiations as the reason for his departure.

A News Corp report claimed star winger Lolley had requested a move west to strugglers Perth Glory but Sydney FC brass rejected the switch.

Continuing their A-League pre-season after last week’s exhibition hit-out against newly promoted Championship outfit Wrexham AFC, Sydney return to competitive action next Tuesday, beginning their Australia Cup campaign against Western United at Ironbark Fields.
