TNT lives to fight another day, trims San Miguel lead

TNT spoiled San Miguel Beer’s coronation while keeping its Grand Slam ambitions alive with an 86-78 victory on Wednesday that extended the PBA Philippine Cup Finals at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Kelly Williams and Almond Vosotros were among those who led the way in the Tropang 5G’s triumph, which reduced the Beermen’s lead in the best-of-seven series to 3-2.

Ganuelas-Rosser had 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and five blocks even as Williams posted 14 points and seven rebounds, the two stepping up in the absence of Poy Erram.

Coach Chot Reyes ruled out Erram for the series after hurting his left knee in Game 4, adding to the sore right ankle he sustained earlier in the championship.

Vosotros had five of his 11 points in the fourth. He was part of the crew that kept TNT afloat after San Miguel managed to trim a deficit of 15 down the third to four early in the final period.

Game 6 is set for Friday at Philsports Arena in Pasig City, with the Tropang 5G hoping to pull off another gritty win that would push the Finals to a decider.

Game 4 hero Jericho Cruz scored 20 points, but only heated up in the second half when the Beermen tried but failed to mount a comeback.

Marcio Lassiter made 15 while June Mar Fajardo had 13 points and 13 rebounds but some of the players key through the Finals, like Don Trollan, were non-existent in San Miguel’s first crack at the trophy.

Game 5 went on as scheduled despite days of downpour that flooded most cities in Metro Manila.

And there was also no sequel to the postgame incident that marred Game 4 when team manager Jojo Lastimosa had an exchange with Chris Ross while also calling out Cruz for his late-game “showboating.”
