With the July 31 trade deadline only a week away, the playoff race is wide open with only seven teams that are more than 6.5 games out of a playoff spot.
Teams will be trying to upgrade to improve their playoff chances, but here are four teams that should be sellers, despite their current standings.
Arizona Diamondbacks
(50-53, 5.5 games out of a wild-card spot)
With a never-ending list of injured pitchers and a record of 8-11 in July, the Diamondbacks would need another miracle run to make the playoffs, and that doesn’t seem very likely.
Home to one of the hottest bats in the league in third baseman Eugenio Suarez, the Diamondbacks need to capitalize on trading him in the final year of his contract and look forward to the 2026 season.
Other notable trade candidates include first baseman Josh Naylor and veteran pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen.
(52-51, 3.5 games out of a wild-card spot)
Entering the 2025 season, the Cardinals had no expectations to be a playoff contender and wanted to give young players runway as they looked toward the future.
Despite exceeding expectations early, the Cardinals have come back down to earth with a 3-7 record over their last 10 games and have almost certainly sealed their fate as sellers this trade deadline.
While some of their pieces have seen their value drop over the past few months, they still have two of the top relief pitchers on the market in Ryan Helsley and Phil Maton.
Other trade candidates include third baseman Nolan Arenado, outfielder Lars Nootbaar and reliever JoJo Romero.
(49-53, five games out of a wild-card spot)
The Twins entered 2025 with playoff hopes but have failed to meet those expectations.
Even though they are getting a MVP-caliber season out of oft-injured outfielder Byron Buxton, they still don’t look like a team that will make noise in the playoffs.
With some of the most sought-after pitchers that could bring back great returns, including starter Joe Ryan and relievers Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax and Danny Coulombe, the Twins need to take a long look in the mirror and determine what the future looks like.
Other trade candidates include first baseman Ty France and outfielders Harrison Bader and Willi Castro.
(49-53, five games out of a wildcard spot)
The Angels entered the 2025 season with nine consecutive seasons finishing below .500, and despite playing better than most expected in 2025, they are on pace to make it 10 straight losing seasons.
While they might not have any top-flight trade talent outside of outfielder Mike Trout, who they won’t trade, they have plenty of serviceable players to help replenish their farm system as they look towards next season.
Outfielder Taylor Ward, along with left-handed pitchers Yusei Kikuchi and Reid Detmers, are going to be the most attractive pieces to other teams and would bring back valuable pieces to a team that needs young talent.
Other trade candidates include utilityman Luis Rengifo and pitchers Tyler Anderson and Kenley Jansen.
