The New York Jets should be praising the football gods that Justin Fields’ toe injury does not seem serious.

Early Thursday morning, the football world had a momentary pause when Fields was carted off the practice field due to a non-contact lower leg injury. After practice, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters that it’s a toe injury. No fracture. Not the big toe. Still in line to start Week 1.

This could not be better news for the Jets. Their backup quarterback is Tyrod Taylor. They just extended Garrett Wilson to a four-year, $130 million deal. They are trying to be better.

Fields seems primed for a potential breakout season with the Jets. He started six games for the Steelers last season, quarterbacking them to a 4–2 record while throwing five touchdown passes to just one interception.

Fields signed a two-year deal worth $40 million with the Jets this offseason. The Jets were in the market for a breath of fresh air when moving on from the expensive and time-consuming Aaron Rodgers era. Fields’ competitive personality brings that.

But without him? It would be another season with more of the same.

While the Jets aren’t going to the Super Bowl this season, surely they would like to catch lightning in a bottle with their 26-year-old quarterback in the same way the Minnesota Vikings did with Sam Darnold’s redemption season. Not to mention, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith have all turned around their careers in recent seasons.

If Fields were to be seriously injured, the Jets would have to settle for a Taylor-led season. Or they could trade draft capital to the Atlanta Falcons for Kirk Cousins, who is 36 years old—one year older than Taylor. And then they’d be responsible for that contract.

Just sounds like a bad idea.

Or you could look at the Cleveland Browns’ messy situation. Joe Flacco? He’s 40. But at least he’s not expensive. Kenny Pickett? He’s a former first-round pick, but the Browns just traded a fifth-rounder and Dorian Thompson-Robinson for him, so it might not be that easy to pry him away.

The Jets should keep Fields in bubble wrap if they can. After moving on from Zach Wilson for Rodgers, they need to hit on a young quarterback at some point.

If Fields is not the answer, they could be positioned to draft a blue-chip quarterback in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. But it surely would be nice to find out if he could be the answer.
