MANILA, Philippines—Scottie Thompson felt mixed emotions when asked about LA Tenorio’s head coaching job at Magnolia.

Before Gilas Pilipinas’ 103-98 win over the Macau Black Bears in a tune-up game Monday night, Tenorio was officially named as the new coach of the Hotshots.

So naturally, Thompson, who was Tenorio’s Barangay Ginebra running mate for the past few years, didn’t know how to react.

“I don’t know, can he still play? Can he coach Magnolia and play in Ginebra?” Thompson asked in jest, still stunned by the development.

“I was totally shocked when I heard it and I don’t know [what to feel] because throughout my transition in the PBA, Kuya LA helped me even in these last few games.”

Thompson, however, blocked out the noise just in time as he contributed in Gilas’ victory with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Drafted in 2015, Thompson needed a role model for his ascent in the Gin Kings’ backcourt.

Fortunately for him, Ginebra had a more than capable veteran in the form of Tenorio, who helped Thompson flourish in the big league.

Together, Thompson and Tenorio orchestrated seven championships for Ginebra.

While it was a sad moment for Thompson to see his older brother go, the former league MVP is still overjoyed for his Ginebra tandem.

“He’s been motivating us [last Playoffs], saying hopefully we get the title because we never know until when he’s here in Ginebra,” Thompson revealed.

“It’s saddening at the same time, I’m happy for him because this is another opportunity for him, his journey and career.”
