Summer McIntosh came up short in a thrilling bid for her fourth-straight gold at the world aquatics championship in Singapore.
In a showdown with American Katie Ledecky and Australian Lanni Pallister, McIntosh finished third in Saturday’s 800-metre freestyle final.
Ledecky, the reigning Olympic champion and world-record holder in the 800-metre freestyle, captured her seventh gold at the world championship in the event.
The 18-year-old McIntosh had already earned a victory over Ledecky in the 400-metre freestyle for the first of her three gold medals at the world championship.
Her three golds had set a new mark for the most by a Canadian at a world championship. Along with the 400-metre freestyle, she also won gold in the 200-metre individual medley and 200-metre butterfly.
Going into the world championship, McIntosh’s goal was to win her five individual races.
She is also set to compete in the 400 individual medley on Sunday.
