MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas asserted its mastery of Indonesia, 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 25-13, to capture its third consecutive bronze in the 5th SEA V.League first leg on Sunday at Terminal 21 Korat in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The Philippine women’s national volleyball team banked on its rising star Angel Canino, who set the tone in the first two sets and scored five of Alas’ last six points in the fourth set to seal the country’s fifth bronze since the regional meet was formed in 2019.

Alas lost steam in the third, but was quick to get its act together with Eya Laure’s back-to-back kills and Jia De Guzman’s drop giving the Philippines an 18-6 spread.

Canino, a Best Outside and Opposite Spiker in the AVC Nations Cup in the past two years, put on the finishing touches, including the game-winning kill from the back row, for the team’s second podium finish this year after emerging as the runner-up of the Nations Cup.

The La Salle standout continued to shine as an Alas player in her first SEA V-League campaign after missing last year’s edition.

Alas erased an 8-13 deficit in the first set as Canino and Fifi Sharma powered a strong comeback for a 20-16 lead. Canino blocked Indonesia captain Megawati Pertiwi for the set point before her frame-clinching kill landed on the opponent’s line.

Canino sustained her fine form in the second for an 11-6 start. Dell Palomata also stepped up, converting two quick attacks followed by Laure’s kill for a 22-16 gap and never looked back, with Canino clinching a two-set lead after a big block.

Alas Pilipinas fell to defending champion Thailand, 25-17, 24-26, 20-25, 20-25, and Vietnam, 13-25, 21-25, 25-23, 9-25, but retained its position on the podium of the four-team tournament.

Indonesia had another winless V-League stint. The next leg will be held in Vietnam from August 8 to 10.
