MANILA, Philippines — Angel Canino continues to flourish with Alas Pilipinas after leading the team to a bronze medal at the 5th SEA V.League leg 1 on Sunday at Terminal 21 Korat in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Canino earned the 1st Best Outside Spiker after delivering Alas’ third consecutive third-place finish and fifth overall in the four-team tournament.

The versatile spiker stepped up when it mattered most to keep the Philippines in the region’s podium following a 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 25-13 win over Indonesia.

It was the La Salle star’s third individual award on the international stage, adding the SEA V.League Best Outside Spiker to her AVC Nations Cup Best Outside Spiker award in Alas’ silver medal finish this year.

Canino also won the Nations Cup Best Opposite Spiker last year.

The former UAAP Rookie MVP joined fellow awardees SEA V.League MVP Pimpichaya Kokram of Thailand, 2nd Best Outside Spiker Ajcharaporn Kongyot, Best Middle Blockers Thadtao Nuekjang (Thailand) and Tran Thi Bich Thuy (Vietnam), as well as Best Opposite Spiker Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen of Vietnam, Best Setter Pornpun Guedpard (Thailand),  and Best Libero Nguyen Khanh Dang (Vietnam).

Thailand survived Vietnam in five sets, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 15-11, for its eighth consecutive SEA V-League championship.

Canino and the Nationals shift their focus to the next leg, which will be held in Vietnam from August 8 to 10.
