The Toronto Blue Jays marquee trade deadline acquisition had mixed results in his first rehab start at triple-A Buffalo.

Shane Bieber pitched 5 innings, striking out six but also allowing two runs on five hits Sunday at Sahlen Field.

The 2020 Cy Young Award winner started out strong, punching out the first two batters he faced, but allowed an RBI single in the second and solo home run in the third. Bieber recovered, recording an efficient 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.

“I just need to continue to execute and refine,” said Bieber after coming out of the game. “But I think I’m in a really good spot.”

His fastball averaged 92.9 m.p.h. and maxed out at 94.4 m.p.h.

The 30-year-old right-hander hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since April 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament.

This was Bieber’s fifth total rehab outing. He has a 1.59 ERA over 11.1 innings, striking out 21 and walking a single batter across three minor-league levels prior to Sunday’s start.

The seven-year veteran pounded the zone against the Mets, throwing 47 of his 62 pitches for strikes.

Bieber’s 30-day rehab assignment began July 15.
