Bruins’ McAvoy has procedure in right shoulder after AC joint injury, infection

Boston Bruins defenceman Charlie McAvoy sustained an injury to his AC joint in his right shoulder during Team USA’s 4 Nations Face-Off game against Finland, the team announced Wednesday.

Bruins’ head physician, Dr. Peter Asnis, explained in a statement issued by the team that Team USA’s medical staff treated McAvoy, but he developed increasing pain when he returned to Boston.

The Bruins’ medical staff examined McAvoy’s injury with x-rays, MRIs and bloodwork, revealing an infection in his right shoulder, as well as a significant injury to his AC joint.

The 27-year-old was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital and underwent a procedure that will keep him sidelined week-to-week.

McAvoy remains in the hospital, where he is being treated with IV antibiotics, but his condition is improving.

This is a tough blow to the Bruins who are on the Eastern Conference playoff bubble with 60 points in 57 games and sit one point back of the Ottawa Senators for the final wild-card spot.
