The New England Patriots got an absolute stud in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
TreVeyon Henderson could’ve been a first-rounder in a class that did not feature the likes of Ashton Jeanty and Omarion Hampton, and some had him as the third running back off the board.
However, as promising as he is, it seems like the Patriots explored going in a different direction at No. 38.
According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, they always had their sights set on Henderson, but they also considered taking someone who went off the board earlier:
“The Patriots were close to making their pick early in the second round (No. 38) and were debating between speedy Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson and another player, according to Wolf. There were differing opinions in the draft room. Ultimately, Wolf said the other player in the discussion was selected before the Patriots’ pick, making the decision for New England,” Reiss wrote.
Of course, that’s just how the NFL Draft works.
You have to consider multiple options and just hope for the best, as you never know for a fact what other teams might do with their picks.
Given this intel, one can assume that they wanted to get Carson Schwesinger, Jayden Higgins, Nick Emmanwori, Quinshon Judkins, or Jonah Savaiinaea.
Even so, they landed an absolute stud.
Henderson works better when he’s a part of a running back committee, and that’s going to be the case in Foxboro with Rhamondre Stevenson also on the field.
He was acknowledged as the primary threat in the Ohio State Buckeyes’ behemoth running back tandem alongside Judkins.
The Patriots revamped their offensive line to help Drake Maye, and bolstering the running game will also be crucial in the first year of the Mike Vrabel era.
