While many athletes envision lengthy careers stretching into their 30s, the physical and mental demands of professional football frequently chart a different course.
Former Pro Bowl safety Keanu Neal recently announced his retirement through Instagram, bringing an end to his seven-year NFL journey.
The 29-year-old’s career, marked by both triumphs and challenges, showcases the volatile nature of professional football.

Selected by the Atlanta Falcons in 2016, Neal quickly established himself as a defensive cornerstone.
His impact was immediate and significant, recording over 100 tackles in his first two seasons and securing a Pro Bowl nod in 2017.
Neal’s defensive prowess proved crucial during the Falcons’ Super Bowl run, where he amassed an impressive 30 tackles throughout the playoffs.
However, the path forward wasn’t smooth. Injuries plagued Neal’s next two seasons, limiting him to just four games.
Despite returning to full health in his final year with Atlanta, substantial free agency offers remained elusive.
His journey continued with the Dallas Cowboys in 2021, where he briefly transitioned to middle linebacker, before finding his way to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022.
Neal’s final NFL chapter unfolded with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he signed a two-year contract.
He swiftly became an integral part of their secondary, earning eight starts and contributing 50 tackles alongside an interception.
Unfortunately, a rib injury disrupted his season, ultimately leading to his release in March.
After an unsuccessful period in free agency during 2024, Neal made the decision to step away from the game.
