Diamondbacks’ Burnes exits vs. Nationals after apparent arm injury


Already dealing with a plethora of injuries to their pitchers, the Arizona Diamondbacks will be hoping for a best-case scenario for their ace.

Star righty Corbin Burnes exited Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals after suffering an apparent arm injury.

Burnes was taken out of the game in the fifth inning after throwing his 70th pitch of the day. Immediately after giving up s single to CJ Abrams, Burnes appeared to signal toward his team’s dugout and yell out in frustration.

Manager Torey Lovullo and a team trainer came to talk to Burnes before he left the mound.

Jalen Beeks replaced Burnes and gave up an RBI single before getting the third out.

Burnes allowed a run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, with a walk and six strikeouts. He’s 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts on the season.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan noted that Burnes’ velocity had dipped two to three miles per hour before being taken out.

Burnes signed with the Diamondbacks in free agency this past off-season. In 10 starts coming into Sunday’s game, he has a 2.72 ERA and 3-2 record with 57 strikeouts in 59.2 innings.

Arizona is currently also dealing with injuries to pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder), A.J. Puk (elbow), Jordan Montgomery (elbow) and Blake Walston (elbow).
