Jack Ginnivan is once again dividing opinion around the footy world, with the Hawthorn star criticised for a cheeky taunt late in the Hawks’ upset win over the Western Bulldogs.
As he ran into an open goal to put the Hawks 27 points up in the final quarter, Ginnivan showed the ball to nearby Bulldogs defenders before kicking the goal.
No stranger to controversy, Ginnivan’s latest antics were always going to spark fierce debate, with even teammates divided.
Speaking to Fox Footy post-game, Mabior Chol, who starred with four goals, admitted he ‘wasn’t a fan’.
“It’s Ginnivan, what can you do?” he said.
“It’s him, it’s his personality. I’m just kind of glad he’s had a massive two weeks and hopefully he can carry that into next week and have a well-earned rest.”
Hawks acting captain Dylan Moore thought differently, however, saying Ginnivan is at his best when ‘causing a little bit of frustration in the opposition’.
“That’s Ginni being Ginni,” Moore told ABC Grandstand.
“When Ginni is at his best, he’s showboating a bit, he’s causing a little bit of frustration in the opposition.
“I absolutely love that.”
That sentiment wasn’t shared by Fox Footy pundit David King, who clipped Ginnivan for taking some of the gloss off his team’s outstanding win, which shores up their position in the top eight.
“Denis Pagan used to say you can embarrass them [opponents] but don’t belittle them,” he said.
“Don’t belittle your opponent because there’s always a return fight, and it could be a bigger game than Round 13.
“It could be first final-type stakes, as it was last year, and they’ll be talking about it.”
King said coach Sam Mitchell would be unlikely to approve.
“He [Mitchell] won’t be thrilled with that, because the hard work was done by all of them tonight, and you just make it about yourself,” he said.
“I think Sam would be disappointed.”
Ginnivan hit back at the criticism on social media, with the 22-year old taking to X to respond.
“Why everyone wanna be so serious, bro can’t have fun,” he wrote, adding two ‘dinosaur’ emojis just for good measure.
