MANILA, Philippines—A lot can be said about Ginebra’s most recent win over TNT in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday night at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

For one, it could imply that the Gin Kings have finally solved the puzzle that has boggled them for two straight PBA Finals. The 97-78 win could also be a sign of their readiness in the playoffs after stopping a streaking Tropang 5g team on its tracks in convincing fashion.

For coach Tim Cone, however, it’s simply a win. Nothing more, nothing less.

“I just don’t think we should make too much of a big deal with this game,” he said.

“It’s an elimination game, they’re coming off a winning streak, they’re coming off a game a day from yesterday. I just don’t think they weren’t that ready for our intensity tonight.”

The Gin Kings not only whipped their rivals but they also halted Tropang 5g’s league-best six-game winning run.

The victory also bolstered Ginebra’s chances of securing a Top Four finish and a twice-to-beat incentive.

That race, though, is still pretty far off from ending and a lot can still change for Ginebra.

For now, Cone opted to give TNT its flowers for winning six in a row after opening the conference at 0-3.

“It was a big game in terms of standings and top four [implications] but you just have to appreciate the six-game winning streak that came after starting the conference slow,” said Cone, who steered Ginebra to a 7-3 record.

“They’re right in the fight and we knew that and I just think we came out with some real ferociousness to start out this game.”

Ginebra ends its elimination round against Rain or Shine on Sunday at Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
