Max Scherzer is expected to make another rehab start with triple-A Buffalo.
If all goes well, his next appearance on the mound could be with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Scherzer will start Wednesday against Worcester.
“I think this is a big one,” Schneider told reporters Saturday. “Hopefully, get into 70-75 pitches, which is kind of what you’re shooting for to get back into major-league action. We’ll talk with him after and kind of see how he’s feeling.
“I think when you’ve come this far along in the process with him, if he needs one more, he needs one more just to kind of make sure. But this could be a big outing for him and if he responds well, his next start could be with us.”
The three-time Cy Young Award winner signed with Toronto as a free agent, however, his Blue Jays debut was limited to just three innings due to an injury to his right thumb.
Scherzer, who was placed on the injured list in late March, threw 56 pitches over 4.1 innings with triple-A Buffalo during his first rehab start Friday night.
Schneider said Scherzer was just experiencing “general soreness” from pitching more than he had since spring training.
“Pretty good conversation with him today and ready to go, hopefully, for a bullpen tomorrow and then get back to his next rehab outing in Buffalo,” Schneider said. “We’re taking it a day at a time and in constant contact with him, but I would say today was probably one of the better days after him off the mound.”
The 40-year-old Scherzer has pitched 18 seasons in the big leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Texas Rangers. He won the World Series in 2019 with the Nationals in 2019 and in 2023 with the Rangers.
