Canucks take 2-1 series lead over Checkers in Calder Cup Finals

The Abbotsford Canucks are just two wins away from their first Calder Cup in franchise history.

They beat the Charlotte Checkers 6-1 on Tuesday night, reclaiming the series lead after losing in overtime in Game 2.

The Checkers opened the scoring, but that one goal was all the Canucks would allow as they took over the game in the second period.

Sammy Blais opened the scoring for the Canucks halfway through the second period, and from there, the floodgates opened. Arshdeep Bains scored two goals, including one into the empty net, and registered four points while Linus Karlsson scored his team-leading 12th Calder Cup Playoff goal, which stood as the game-winner. He added two more assists on the evening.

Phil Di Guiseppe and Tristan Neilson also scored for the home team, while goaltender Arturs Silovs, who has put on a clinic between the pipes these playoffs, stopped 28 of 29 shots and added an assist on Di Guiseppe’s goal.

Earlier Tuesday night, the Checkers’ NHL affiliate, the Florida Panthers, won the Stanley Cup.

Game 4 of the Calder Cup Finals takes place on Thursday in Abbotsford.
