Del Monte stop tough test for JPGT field

The four-leg Mindanao swing of the Junior PGT Championship series gets off the ground on Wednesday, with majestic Del Monte in Bukidnon hosting and where local bets will obviously have the edge.

Alexis Nailga, who actually won in Mactan last month, has vast knowledge of the course inside a pineapple plantation that still stands as one of the toughest tests in the country.

Another Bukidnon native, Clement Ordeneza, will be headlining the boys’ 15-18 centerpiece division together with Nailga as they defend home turf and inch closer to slots to the national finals featuring players from the north and south.

The regional circuit forms part of the broader Visayas-Mindanao swing, a seven-leg series where the best three results in each age category (7-10, 11-14, 15-18) will determine the final rankings. The top four players per division from both Vis-Min and Luzon circuits will qualify for the ICTSI North vs South Elite Junior Finals slated Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 at The Country Club in Laguna.

Precious Zaragosa, a native of Davao who plays out of Canlubang, is the odds-on pick in the girls’ division, which will also be disputed over 54 holes even as the 36-hole 11-14 boys’ division will feature two promising local bets in Mico Woo and Marcus Duenas.

Other notable players in this group are the Saban brothers Jared and Laurence, with Angel May Wahing and Yvonne Colim headlining the 11-14 girls’ field.
