Oddsmakers are ready to anoint the Texas Longhorns as the SEC’s best team, but former Florida national championship-winning coach Steve Spurrier isn’t having it.
Expectation are high for Texas with highly-touted five-star quarterback prospect Arch Manning, the nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, taking over as the team’s starter after backing up Quinn Ewers, who was a 2025 seventh-round NFL Draft pick, the past two seasons.
Per Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, Spurrier dismissed the hype surrounding Manning in an interview with longtime sports journalist Pat Dooley.
“Most people picking Texas to win the SEC. They’ve got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman,” Spurrier said.
“My question is: if he was this good, how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year? And he was a seventh-round pick.”
