The Chicago Cubs activated left-hander Shota Imanaga from the injured list to start Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals and opened a roster spot by designating right-hander Michael Fulmer for assignment.

Imanaga, 31, has been out since May 4 with a hamstring strain. Before the injury, he allowed two runs or fewer in six of his eight starts.

He is 3-2 with a 2.82 ERA this season and has gone 18-5 with a 2.89 ERA in 37 starts over the past two seasons with the Cubs, including an All-Star selection in 2024.

Fulmer, 32, had two scoreless relief appearances for the Cubs and has a combined 4.76 ERA in three appearances with the Boston Red Sox and Cubs. In 265 career games (90 starts) over eight seasons with four clubs, including the Cubs twice, Fulmer is 37-50 with a 3.95 ERA.
