Phillies pitcher caps phenomenal month with latest gem

The Philadelphia Phillies had an inconsistent June that featured a five-game losing streak at the beginning of the month, but Monday night was a reminder of how good they can be.

Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler nearly went the distance in a 4-0 shutout over the San Diego Padres, capping a flawless month on the mound.

Wheeler pitched eight innings and gave up six hits and zero runs. He did not allow a walk and recorded 10 strikeouts in his 107-pitch performance. His latest outing gave the Phillies their 50th win of the season and improved his ERA to a ridiculous 0.58 in June.

A 1-2-3 fourth inning kept the Padres guessing, especially an 84 mph sweeper that got first baseman Gavin Sheets to swing and miss.
