Cam Smith comments on Kangaroos coaching position following withdrawal of Brad Fittler from the race

With the news that Brad Fittler is now out of the running for the Kangaroos coaching job, NRL legend Cam Smith has reaffirmed his interest in learning more about the role.

Mal Meninga has departed from the position as he takes up the coaching job with the Perth Bears, leaving a vacancy that must be filled ahead of the Ashes.

Fittler revealed he was removing himself from the race on Monday, citing a desire to focus on other commitments.

Smith, who played for Australia 56 times, however, is still keen for a chat about how the role would look and whether he would be able to fit it into his existing schedule.

“Well yeah, absolutely, I think I’m keen to have a conversation with someone about the role and what the role will entail,” Smith told Nine’s 100% Footy.

“I still haven’t spoken to anyone at the NRL, anyone involved with the (ARL) Commission at all.

“I think we all assumed (Brad Fittler) was going to be the next Kangaroos coach, so it is all breaking news for us today.

“I think for me, if I was to take on the role or even consider taking on the role, I’d have to have a conversation with someone about what the role would entail, what the commitments would be.

“Of course, there’s an Ashes coming up and then a World Cup next year as well.

“As Freddy said, he’s got a great job with Channel Nine, as do I, I love my role with the commentary team at the moment, I’ve got three young kids as well, I’m up in Bundaberg watching my eldest play netball (tonight).

“But it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to coach our country. I was lucky enough to play for Kangaroos many, many times.

“To be able to coach such a wonderful team full of wonderful footballers would be a great opportunity.”

Former Broncos coach Kevin Walters is also seen as a leading candidate for the position.
