Report: Bucks re-sign Gary Trent Jr. to two-year, $7.5M deal

After a down year off the bench for the Bucks, Gary Trent Jr. is set to sign a prove-it deal.

The former Raptors guard put pen to paper on a two-year, $7.5 million contract to remain with the Milwaukee Bucks, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday.

According to Charania, the deal comes with a player option in the second season, meaning that if he gets his numbers back to where they were with Toronto, he could opt out and sign a bigger deal with the Bucks or elsewhere.

Trent Jr., 26, primarily played off the bench in his first season in Milwaukee, averaging 11.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 43.1 per cent from the field and 41.6 per cent from three-point range. He made 74 appearances, with only nine starts, and averaged 25.6 minutes a night.

However, he enjoyed a bigger role in the Bucks’ lone playoff series against the Pacers, where he dropped a combined 70 points on 17-for-29 from three-point range in Games 3 and 5.

Trent Jr. joined the Bucks on a one-year, $2.1 million contract last off-season after being unable to find suitors on the open market.

He was selected by the Sacramento Kings 37th overall in the second round in 2018 and was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers on draft night. After the better part of three seasons in Portland, he was traded to the Raptors for Norman Powell, and spent three more years in Toronto.
