Clint Escamis, Bella Belen lead stars at CPC Awards

MANILA, Philippines—Monday night was a celebration for the stars of the NCAA and the UAAP as the Collegiate Press Corps held its annual awards night at Discovery Suites in Pasig.

Clint Escamis was the main man of the night, securing not just a spot in the CPC Mythical Five list but also snagging the CPC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year plum.

Joining the Mapua standout in the mythical squad were Allen Liwag of College of St. Benilde, Mike Philips and Kevin Quiambao of La Salle and JD Cagulangan of the University of the Philippines.

Over at the women’s side, Ateneo gem Kacey Dela Rosa was hailed Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, while UAAP Season 87 Rookie of the Year and Finals MVP Cielo Pagdulagan of National University, Kent Pastrana of the University of Santo Tomas, Louna Ozar of UP, and Elaine Etang of Adamson rounded out the Mythical Team.

Before the young cagers were awarded, though, the event backed by San Miguel Corporation, held a moment of silence for late coach Sammy Acaylar and Gilas Pilipinas Girls’ Ashlyn Abong, who passed away on Friday.

Bella Belen, who was recently drafted by Capital1 in the PVL, also took the spotlight.

Belen, who had a perfect sendoff after claiming a third MVP award and leading NU to another crown, was named the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year.

Her fellow NU standout Leo Aringo, who has taken his act to Japan, took home the same award in the men’s division.

As for the NCAA, Zam Nolasco of the College of St. Benilde took home her own hardware as the league’s Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year while Carl Berdal of Arellano won the Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year after his Season 100 title run with the Chiefs.

The famed tacticians of the collegiate sporting scene were also lauded.

Goldwin Monteverde’s steering of UP to the Season 87 title earned him the UAAP Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year plum while Randy Alcantara’s run with the Cardinals for the Season 100 championship merited him the NCAA Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year citation.

NU hit more golds with the victories of Dante Alinsunurin and Sherwin Meneses as this year’s UAAP Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Coaches of the Year, respectively.

For the NCAA, Jerry Yee’s exemplary mentoring of the Lady Blazers earned him the Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year award while Bryan Vitug reigned victorious for his coaching of Arellano’s men’s team.

The NCAA was also awarded a special citation for staging its 1ooth season.

The CPC also awarded its inaugural Football Players of the Year in Mon Diansuy of Far Eastern University, Carmela Altiche and Amir Aningalan of San Beda.
