Gilas Women up for tough task in Asia Cup

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines will host the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup 2027, the world basketball federation announced on Thursday.

Four years after its successful hosting of the 2024 Fiba World Cup, it’s the women’s basketball’s turn to play in Manila against the top Asian teams.

The country also hosted the 2013 Fiba Men’s Asia Cup, where Gilas Pilipinas bagged the silver medal to enter the World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

“We are excited to return to the Philippines for a Fiba Asia event,” said Fiba Executive Director-Asia Mr. Hagop Khajirian.

“We believe hosting the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup event in the Philippines, where basketball has a passionate following, will help Fiba’s efforts to promote women’s basketball in Asia. The event will also serve as a boost to the SBP’s efforts to promote women’s basketball in the Philippines.”

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas relished its upcoming hosting of the continental championship, hoping to boost the continuous rise of Gilas Women and women’s basketball in the country as a whole.

“The federation has always been an ardent partner of Fiba in prioritizing the growth of women’s basketball, and it’s about time for the Philippines to do even more,” said SBP President Al Panlilio.

“The timing is perfect for the Philippines to host this competition as women’s basketball in the country currently has great momentum behind it with the foundation of a women’s professional league and some of our national team players getting opportunities to play abroad.”

Gilas Women placed sixth in their last Women’s Asia Cup appearance in 2023 in Sydney, Australia.

The Filipino women’s basketball players compete in the Women’s Asia Cup in Shenzhen, China from July 13 to 20, battling No. 2 Australia, No. 9 Japan, and No. 54 Lebanon in Group B.
