Blues star narrowly avoids injury after projectile hurled by rogue spectator

Blues utility Connor Watson and an innocent bystander narrowly avoided what could have been a serious injury after a full can was thrown at him in an ugly aftermath to Wednesday night’s State of Origin decider.

Watson was walking up the stairs in the Accor Stadium grandstand to meet family and friends well after NSW had lost the series decider 24-12 when the can was thrown in his direction.

A fan was shaking his hand at the time when the can of Canadian Club was thrown from the upper deck, striking the unsuspecting patron on the shoulder as he was saying hello to Watson.

The Roosters star told the Daily Telegraph that the rogue spectator who hurled the can should face serious consequences.

“I’ve had to go up there, my family and friends were up there,” Watson said.

“One of my mates is in a wheelchair, and he can’t come down the stairs, so I have walked up there to go see him.

“As I’m walking, a can of Canadian Club lands right next to me and it’s like someone had thrown it at me.

“If they did throw it… the words I want to use for it… I can’t say right now.

“It’s disappointing to be honest.

Security staff intervened but the perpetrator had not been found. Stadium officials will use CCTV footage to try to identify the hooligan.

A bottle was thrown at the Bulldogs reserves on the sideline at the same venue last week.
