Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh announces retirement from NFL

The defensive tackle made his retirement from the NFL official two and a half years after playing his final game.

Suh announced his decision to finally step away from football on the one-year anniversary of his father’s death.

“It’s the day I said goodbye to my father, the man who raised me, shaped me, challenged me, and believed in me before I believed in myself,” Suh wrote on X. “He wasn’t just a dad. He was my idol, my coach, and my anchor. He taught me what it meant to be disciplined, focused, and relentless in everything I do. Every snap I took in football carried his fingerprint. Every time I lined up across from someone, I could hear his voice pushing me, reminding me that I wasn’t just representing myself. I was representing him, my family, my name. Before he passed, he gave me one final piece of advice, ‘It’s time to let football go. You’ve done everything you set out to do. Now it’s time for the next chapter.’”

The 38-year-old played 13 seasons in the NFL appearing in 199 games with the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles.

He finished with 600 tackles, 71.5 sacks five forced fumbles and an interception. He was a three-time All-Pro and a five-time Pro Bowler. He won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers in 2021 against the Kansas City Chiefs, recording two tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The Lions selected Suh second overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. He finished playing in the Super Bowl with his last three teams, making him just the sixth player in NFL history to play in the championship game with three different franchises.
