The New England Patriots needed someone to help Drake Maye’s development.
They didn’t have many – if any – weapons for the passing game.
That’s why they chose to pursue multiple wide receivers in free agency, and after several failed attempts, they wound up getting Stefon Diggs.
That was quite a risky bet, not only because of his well-documented character issues, but because he was coming off a major knee injury.
However, the team always seemed optimistic about his progress, and it seems like they did the right thing.
As reported by Los Talks Pats on X, the team didn’t place him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp, so he’s trending in the right direction to be ready for the beginning of the season.

Diggs was having a solid season with the Houston Texans before his ACL injury.
He had a down year in his final moments with the Buffalo Bills, and some thought that he was already trending down, but last season’s play was rather encouraging.
The Patriots still made a big gamble with the signing, and he made the rounds for all the wrong seasons when a video of him at a boat party surfaced.
Even so, that’s just the type of thing you will have to deal with when you sign a high-character player like Diggs.
At the end of the day, all that matters is that he’s out there and healthy when it counts.
