GWS are facing being without captain Toby Greene for their crucial clash with the Western Bulldogs next week, after the star forward was handed a one-match suspension for a strike on Sydney’s Isaac Heeney.
Greene arrived late after Heeney was tackled in the first quarter of the Sydney Derby, giving away a free kick after driving his forearm into the Swan’s head as he lay on the ground.
While Heeney was able to play out the match, Match Review Officer Michael Christian graded the incident as intentional conduct with low impact and high contact, triggering a one-match ban.
The Giants are seen as all but certain to challenge the sanction at the AFL Tribunal, given the stakes of their match against the Bulldogs, which could prove an elimination final given the race for spots in the eight between a tight top nine.
Greene has, however, escaped any sanction for his cheeky ‘overweight’ jibe at Swan Tom Papley at half time, following a series of spotfires between the fiery pair.
“He’s looking overweight, so we’ll see how he goes in the second half,” Greene said in an interview with Fox Footy.
