Chery Tiggo wants to put a sputtering elimination round finish behind and move forward, starting with the Crossovers’ dangerous knockout match with Galeries Tower in the PVL On Tour on Saturday at Dasmariñas Arena in Cavite.
“It’s both frustrating, especially the game against ZUS (Coffee),” coach Norman Miguel told the Inquirer, referring to back-to-back losses that closed out classification and dragged them to this one-miss-you-die phase.
“But we have to move forward since the chance of getting to the quarterfinals is still open,” he added, ruing his side’s 29 errors that helped seal their doom against ZUS.
Particularly painful of those losses was the five-set defeat to the Thunderbelles, where they were held to just six fifth-set points.
“Mental toughness will play a vital role here; errors must be corrected, connections must be reestablished, and most importantly, the team must have the will to win,” Miguel, a champion UAAP coach with National University, said of the keys to a bounce back.
The Crossovers and Highrisers battle at 6:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to a quarterfinal match against the Nxled Chameleons.
Farm Fresh, which finished third in Pool A with a 3-2 record, takes on winless Capital1 at 4 p.m. for the right to face crowd-darling and powerhouse Creamline on Aug. 9 at Philsports Arena.
Chery Tiggo will continue to lean on who is turning out to be the biggest steal of the Draft, Ren Peñafiel, the determined outside hitter who has been leading the way despite being selected in the third round. Also vital are mainstays Cess Robles, Ara Galang, Imee Hernandez, Aby Maraño and setters Jasmine Nabor and Alina Bicar.
The Crossovers need to be cautious against the Highrisers, who may be winless in five games but put up decent fights in all of their outings.
Galeries’s biggest PVL achievement came in the All-Filipino Conference, when it upset No.3 Cignal for an outright quarterfinal berth despite a sluggish preliminary round record.
