J.J. McCarthy is set to take over as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings after missing his entire rookie year with a knee injury.
McCarthy used his recovery time wisely. He spent hours studying film and working directly with head coach Kevin O’Connell to refine his understanding of the offense.
The work has paid off in noticeable ways during recent practice sessions, and O’Connell recently spoke about what he has seen from McCarthy during their preparation.
“It’s the dialogue of the great protection calls he’s made. It’s the dialogue of a great checkdown he’s made on first-and-10 when maybe the downfield shot’s not there. Those are the things that I’ve really enjoyed and really seen him grow. But at the same time, he’s a competitive sucker now. He wants to win every drill and win every day, and you know, that’s kind of my job, to try to bring a complete feel to everything that we’re doing,” O’Connell said.

The quarterback has developed strong chemistry with his top receivers, as his timing with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison looks natural.
McCarthy’s footwork has improved significantly, and his ability to read defenses has taken a step forward.
Minnesota didn’t hand McCarthy the starting job because of his first-round draft status or salary cap considerations.
The decision came from a genuine belief in his abilities, and the organization has built a supporting cast designed to help the young quarterback succeed.
The offensive line features veterans, and the skill position players offer multiple options.
His college experience helping Michigan to a national championship provides a foundation of winning at the highest level.
