The Boston Red Sox will have to finish the 2025 season without the services of a former all-star.
Manager Alex Cora confirmed to reporters Saturday that starting pitcher Tanner Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the season.
The 29-year-old right-hander hasn’t pitched since May 12 when he was sidelined by a flexor pronator strain of his right elbow.
Houck struggled in 2025, with an 8.04 ERA over nine starts with Boston.
But he’s just one year removed from his first all-star selection when he had a 3.12 ERA over 30 starts in 2024.
Houck was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2014 MLB Draft out of high school, but opted to go to college instead of turning pro. The Red Sox then drafted him in the first round (24th overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft.
He made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2020 and has a career 3.97 ERA over five seasons.
