One of the Toronto Blue Jays‘ most important players this season is set to rejoin the team at the perfect time.
All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk is in line to get back to action on Sunday after missing the last seven games while on the 7-day injured list, manager John Schneider told reporters on Saturday.
Kirk suffered a concussion in a game on July 26 against the Detroit Tigers, leaving the outing after being hit by a foul tip while backstopping.
The 26-year-old suited up for a rehab game with triple-A Buffalo on Friday, batting 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
He was set to suit up for another rehab game with the Bisons on Saturday, serving as the team’s designated hitter, but Schneider said that appearance has been cancelled to avoid any risk.
Kirk has been one of the Blue Jays’ most important offensive and defensive pieces this season, hitting .304 with a .775 OPS and seven home runs while serving as the team’s primary backstop.
In the seven games since he’s been out of the lineup, the Blue Jays have gone 2-5 but remain atop the American League East with a 65-47 record.
